Scores from South Road – VSDCA Round 7 Day 1

Saturday saw a return to red ball cricket as we kicked off 2 day games across all 4 VSDCA grades vs Malvern CC.

The 1st XI won the toss and bowled on a grass covered pitch at T.H. King Reserve in Glen Iris. After a strong opening partnership from Malvern, the bowling unit did well either side of tea to restrict the scoring rate and break any partnerships that threatened to emerge. After having Malvern 5/110 shortly after tea we had the potential to be batting that night but a good stand from Malvern would see this fail to eventuate. Luke Shimmin was the pick of the bowlers, going at fewer than 2 runs per over with an impressive 10 maidens across the day. Late wickets enabled us to restrict Malvern to 232, a very achievable target given the fast outfield.

The 2nd XI also bowled, this time at BBO. Hamish Graham kicked things off, bowling a remarkably frugal spell of 9 overs for just 6 runs. Josh Gates chimed in with two top-order wickets from his 14 overs, whilst spinners Jack Moffitt and Darcy Kennelly bowled 31 between them taking 2 and 3 wickets respectively. After 66 overs Malvern were all out for 152, with our chase off to a strong start at 1/28 with Andrew Martin unbeaten on 24.

The 3rd XI were at Malvern City Oval and also faced a day in the field. A disciplined bowling performance on the small ground saw wickets shared between Ben Sexton (2), Joey Wilson (2), the returning Jack Rutter (3) and Richard Pearson (1). Malvern were looking at getting away at 5/195 but some late wickets helped us restrict the total to 9/231.

The 4th XI stuck to the day’s script and fielded. Cam McKenzie undoubtedly the star taking 7/47 from 25 overs. Josh Badge and Jack Seymour also bowled incredibly tight spells, with Blake Foreshew chiming in with 10 handy overs of his own. Having dismissed Malvern for 176 in 74 overs, we successfully navigated the evenings session and closed the day’s play 0/7.
