An excellent weekend for Brighton Rookies
It was a great weekend for Brighton Rookies players with both teams having straightforward wins on Saturday.
Rookies 1 put in their best performance yet under Captain Freddie Arnhold and recorded their first win of the season.
The bowling against Port Melbourne was greatly improved with stand-out performances from Hugh 2/2 and Freddie 2/12 This was backed up by a fantastic fielding display with the team inflicting 5 run outs, including a direct hit from 15m by Josh Carr, this spectacular fielding prompted Freddie to award Josh the ‘Love Pollo Play of the Day’ award. Wicketkeepers Hugo and Nick were outstanding, they kept byes to a minimum and each took catches; with fielders Sam & Freddie also showing safe hands.
Batting was safe and steady with some impressive, and much improved, running and calling for valuable singles. Nick was the top scorer for the team backing up his tight bowling (1/4) and got the team home for a 25 run win.
Grill’d Man of the match went jointly to Hugh and Freddie for their bowling performances.
Rookies 2 had a home game against Washington Park. Captain James Hepples won the toss and had no hesitation in fielding first. The team responded well by restricting the scoring through some tight bowling and excellent fielding. Thomas B led the way with the outstanding figures of 2 overs, 2 maidens & 1 wicket. Josh Tonini took his first wicket of the season having missed the stumps by a whisker on several previous occasions, his bowling figures (1/4) were just what the team needed at the end of the innings.
The bowlers were backed up by some excellent fielding and 2 great performances behind the stumps by Clyde & Mitch, with Mitch taking a catch and completing a great run out from Coopers excellent fielding. Mitch also contributed with the bat with 5 lusty blows that all found the boundary.
It was an impressive batting innings by the team who all remained unbeaten. Thomas A hit the only 6 of the game in his quick-fire 20, having already taken 1/2 with the ball. Nick McCluskey scored his first runs of the campaign including a delicate flick off his legs for 4. Dante and Jonathan batted really well together again with some excellent calling and running between the wickets to back up several well timed 4s in their 33 run partnership.
James chose Mitch’s catch behind the stumps as the ‘Love Pollo Play of the Day’. Thomas B was the ‘Grill’d Player of the Day’ for an excellent all round performance.
Sunday saw many of the boys from both teams working hard in the nets, with several players showing instant improvement. All this hard work will surely reap benefits in the coming games. Thanks to all of the parents that have helped out over the weekend.
