Scores from South Road – Round 1 Day 2

The 1st XI weren’t able to get off to a winning start, going down to Ormond CC in a low scoring affair at BBO. Defending 98 was always going to be difficult, but Luke Shimmin (4/44) ensured we were always in the game, eventually, dismissing Ormond for 133. We then batted out 20 overs, reaching 2/51 as the game finished a touch early with no other result possible.

The 2nd XI fared considerably better as a fantastic batting effort ensured a comfortable victory. Chasing 178 to win, openers Stuart Fairley (51) and Ben Johns (35) got us off to a positive start before a wonderful partnership between Lewis Palmer (88) and James Perkins-Stafford (103*) put the game well beyond doubt. A huge congratulations to James, who in his 199th Senior game for BCC notched his maiden (and well deserved!) century.

The 3rd XI also got off to a winning start, as they successfully defended a strong total at Donald McDonald Reserve. Chasing 252 was always going to be a tough ask for Ormond, particularly so thanks to the bowling exploits of father/son combination Richard (5/14) and Henry Pearson (3/16). The visitors went from 2/71 to 6/72 and never really looked likely after that, eventually all out in 75 overs for 146.

After a tremendous batting display, the 4th XI managed a winning start to the year. Defending 289, Ormond were dismissed for 157 with McKenzie, Evans, Luke and Kyritsis each taking two wickets. On the off chance of a rare outright victory, the opposition were asked to bat again but successfully negotiated another 15 overs to finish at 1/80.

The 5th XI came up against a strong Monash University team on Sunday at BBO. Bowling first, Monash amassed a very competitive total of 8/237. James Hepples once again was in the wickets, taking 3/35 from 8 overs. He was ably assisted by Albert Retief who also secured 3/42. The large total proved too much for our inexperienced batting line-up, who were dismissed for 84 from 31 overs. Ben Sexton top scored with an unbeaten 27 to go with his 2 wickets from earlier in the day.
