Season Close

It was a heartbreaking weekend for the Tonners as both the 1st XI and 2nd XI saw their season come to a close on the final day.

Duncan McKenzie’s leg spin had Balwyn in all sorts, but a polished performance with ball in hand could not be reciprocated with the bat. A ten run defeat left us hoping either Malvern had lost, or Box Hill had lost by more than us (complicated we know!). Malvern comfortably accounted comfortably Elsternwick, which left our eyes fixated on Box Hill vs Bayswater. Box Hill were unable to chase down Bayswater’s 216, but did manage 194 in reply, meaning we were even on points and the season would come down to percentage.

Ultimately the table read Box Hill 103.15 vs Brighton’s 103.11 – essentially we were eliminated by a single run over the course of an entire season…

The 2nd XI were unable to capture their recent strong form, stuttering to 9/158 on a fast outfield at Brighton Beach Oval. Balwyn easily chased this down, however Mt Waverley’s win meant we had already been eliminated from finals contention.

The 3rd XI warmed up for the post-season with a strong win away at Balwyn. Hugh Hamilton’s form with the bat continued with an assured 49, whilst the pace of Josh Gates was a constant threat as he collected 4/20 off his 9 overs. The 3rds will host Box Hill this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) at Brighton Beach Oval.

The 4th XI also closed the regular season in style, accounting for Balwyn at MacDonald Reserve. A disciplined bowling performance from Patrick and Nick Kyritsis as well as captain Cam McKenzie limited the visitors to 159 off their 40 overs. After an excellent opening partnership between Hugo Crawford (31) and Nick Thorburn (33), Simon Fanning wound back the clock with 41 to add to his earlier two wickets. The 4th XI this week travel to Springfield Park to play Box Hill.

Finally, the 5th XI magnificently chased down 189 vs Carnegie, with Langenfelds (60), Edmondson (49*) and Reddell (42) the heroes with the bat. They play a Semi-Final this Sunday vs Monash University, with the venue still TBA.
