Scores from South Road – Round 1 Day 1

The Season got off to an exciting start on Saturday with our 4 VSDCA teams battling against Ormond.

At BBO, the 1st XI lost wickets at consistent intervals on a tricky wicket for batting. Eventually bowled out for just 98 in 45 overs, Brenton Murphy and Sean Wilson provided the most resistance, each making 27. In reply Ormond are 4/72 with Alex Hewet taking 2/16 in a noteworthy debut performance.

Across at EE Gunn Reserve, the 2nd XI lost the toss and were asked to field. After a solid opening partnership, Duncan McKenzie got in on the act, taking the first of what would eventually be a 5 wicket haul from more than 23 overs. Joseph Wilson wasn’t to be outdone, taking 4/31 off 9 as we dismissed Ormond for 178. In reply, Stuart Fairley and UK import Ben Johns saw us successfully through to stumps, closing the day’s play at 0/34.

Donald McDonald Reserve saw the 3rd XI commence their season. With Captain Hamish Swaffield out injured, the rest of the group stepped up in his absence, posting a very competitive 251. Andrew Martin top scored with 64 and was ably supported with good contributions from Max Milnes (44), Richard Pearson (36), Oscar O’Brien (35) and Henry Pearson (28). Ormond are 1/16 in reply after Max Milnes struck late in the day.

The 4th XI were no doubt the star performers of Saturday. Batting on EE Gunn #2 the performances of Nick Thorburn and Tony Sheppard, in particular, were immensely impressive. Both men notching centuries with Nick top scoring with 139 and Tony not far behind with 104. Their partnership of 243 is very likely a record, but we will have to double check! After declaring our innings closed at 3/289, Angus Evans did some damage with the ball to leave Ormond 3/45 overnight.

Finally, the 5th XI graced BBO on Sunday playing Carnegie. After their premiership season last year we are now playing in the MCA Sunday C Division in 2018/19. Father and son duo Peter and Ben Sexton led the way with the bat, making 55 and 28 respectively as we posted a competitive 9/189 off 45 overs. In reply, Carnegie crept across the line with 9 balls to spare. Peter Sexton taking 3/22 off a very economical 9 overs whilst James Hepples impressed on debut with 2/15 off his 6 overs.
