Brighton Hatch defeat Malvern.
Brighton’s U/15 Hatch team defeated Malvern today (Thursday) to win through to the quarter finals of the RM Hatch Competition.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Malvern reached 142 off their allotted 45 overs, a competitive score, but an innings which lacked a major partnership. For the Tonners the pick of the bowlers was Louis Gillies whose 9 overs of off-spin reaped 2/14, as well as the openers who combined for 2/34 off their 14.
Chasing a score just over 3 an over, Brighton maintained a steady run rate throughout their innings, and passed Malvern’s score with 3 overs to go. After losing both the openers early, a partnership of 52 between Harper Leonard (36) and Louis Gilllies (28) ensured Brighton were always in front. The innings was completed by a dynamic 54 run partnership between Oliver Gunning (37*) and Daniel Borys (24).
Chasing runs in what was effectively a final is never easy, and after back-to-back wins setting a large total it was nice to see the boys chase the runs with confidence. There are certainly a few areas to work on, but the boys must be commended for their attitude over the tournament, and especially this week where they have won 3 consecutive high pressure games. Credit must go to Malvern who played a great game of cricket and fielded exceptionally well. Malvern had quite a young team and will undoubtedly be very strong next year.
Sunday’s Quarter Final will be played against the team who finished 2nd in the East group.
Go Tonners.
