It is with great sadness that we advise of the passing of former player Richard Andrew (‘Dick’ or ‘Dicky’) Ballam on Sunday night after a long illness. Dick was a notable player and character whose playing career spanned 20 years (1978-1998) and 241 games in all elevens. He arrived at Brighton in 1978 at the age of 36 after spending a number of seasons with the South Melbourne and Ferntree Gully clubs. A fine top-order batsman, with an excellent technique, he played most of his early cricket at Brighton for the 1st XI, but later dropped down the grades to give younger players an opportunity. He...

Saturday saw a return to red ball cricket as we kicked off 2 day games across all 4 VSDCA grades vs Malvern CC. The 1st XI won the toss and bowled on a grass covered pitch at T.H. King Reserve in Glen Iris. After a strong opening partnership from Malvern, the bowling unit did well either side of tea to restrict the scoring rate and break any partnerships that threatened to emerge. After having Malvern 5/110 shortly after tea we had the potential to be batting that night but a good stand from Malvern would see this fail to eventuate. TWO East Sandringham Junior Football Club old boys met on the stage at the AFL national draft at Marvel Stadium last night. One was Brownlow Medal great Chris Judd. The other was 18-year-old Liam Stocker. In his role as a Carlton director, Judd presented a Blues jumper to Sandringham Dragons graduate Stocker after the club selected him at No 19. In a live-trading first, the Blues had pushed through an exchange of 2019 first-round picks with the Adelaide Crows to stock up on Stocker. Liam Stocker in a Carlton strip. It was a buzz for the midfielder to shake on it with Judd,...

1st XI – The annual round of Saturday-Sunday cricket didn’t prove kind to the 1st XI as a promising start with the bat ultimately faded to nothing. Winning the toss and batting at BBO a strong platform was laid by Brenton Murphy (49), Charith Cooray (27), Marcus Glenister (26) and Ben Johns (27) which saw us at one stage 1/117. Unfortunately there would be an almighty collapse to come as we lost 4/3 in the middle order before some late order hitting from James Harrod (30) saw us post 180. In reply Altona’s bats were simply superb. 2 centurions and only one wicket lost as they past our total...
